How to Design a Board Game

The first game originated around 4,600 years ago in Mesopotamia and was named the Royal Game of UR. Since then, game inventors have been pondering how to design a board game, card game or other game invention for all of time. The many questions always arise:

When designing your own board game, you need to create a concept and define the object of the game and the way it will play. You can review existing games to create your own version of the rules you like.

Build your own game concept by sketching out your ideas. Get a pencil, marker or other and some poster board, cardboard, paper, or whatever you have available. You'll want larger the paper for a game board, as well as smaller paper for cards and/or denominations of play money. Consider purchasing some Large Blank Sheets of Paper and Blank Game Boards as a starting point.

You'll also want to get some game tokens/player pieces and dice. Don't limit yourself to the conventional game components that other games are using, think outside the box such as using numbered a 10-sided, 12-sided or even 20-sided game die. Maybe a sand timer or custom spinner board. Consider a Game Inventors Kit that will provide you with lots of unique, fun choices as your starting point.

Play test the game over and over to work out all the details. Encourage other to provide ideas and welcome criticism that might help to make a better game play. Add all of your ideas and seek what works to make it fun and have the mechanics of the game play work to your liking.
